Saudi Arabia Halts Key East-West Pipeline Following Drone Incursion from Iraq
Saudi Arabia has suspended flows along its vital East-West crude pipeline as a precautionary measure following a cross-border drone strike originating in Iraq, compounding energy supply concerns across the Middle East. The 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) conduit, which allows the kingdom to bypass the vulnerable Strait of Hormuz, handles between 4% and 5% of total global oil supply. Satellite imagery captured smoke and scorched ground around the targeted infrastructure, while the Saudi foreign ministry confirmed reports of injuries and localized damage currently under review.
In response to the incident, Baghdad confirmed that the unmanned aircraft were launched from its Iran-bordering Maysan province, prompting the immediate dismissal of the regional military operations commander and the launch of a formal inquiry. Riyadh has held off on military retaliation following diplomatic contact with Iraq's prime minister, though officials maintained that the kingdom reserves the right to take all necessary steps to safeguard its national security and strategic assets. The Gulf Cooperation Council strongly condemned the aggression, labeling it a serious breach of international law and a hazardous escalation.
The strike coincides with mounting instability across regional transit corridors. In Yemen, Iranian-backed Houthi forces have made sweeping advances along the Red Sea shoreline and near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, threatening Saudi-linked maritime traffic. While Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched counter-offensives in the coastal hub of Mokha, the simultaneous threats to pipeline networks and maritime chokepoints continue to elevate risk premiums across global crude markets.
