JGB Yields Slide as Trump Holds Off on Iran Threat, Middle East Tensions Ease
The benchmark 10‑year Japanese government bond (JGB) yield fell 2.5 basis points to 2.280% on Tuesday, retreating from Monday’s two‑month high of 2.305%. The dip comes as investors see a possible off‑ramps in the Middle East after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington had held talks with an unnamed Iranian official – a claim Tehran denies.
The easing of risk sentiment follows a day of intense geopolitical activity. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resumed strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and continued operations against Iranian forces after a meeting with Trump. Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported a missile barrage from Iran aimed at northern Israel, which it said it was intercepting.
Asian markets are reacting to the broader impact of the Iran war on energy supplies. With oil and gas shipments disrupted and the Strait of Hormuz accounting for roughly 20% of global trade, many Asian economies are turning to coal as a short‑term substitute. The United States is pushing to expand liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to the region, positioning LNG as a bridge fuel in the transition away from coal and oil. However, LNG still emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
The European Union’s Ursula von der Leyen has called for an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East, citing a “critical” situation for global energy supply chains. The EU and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the knock‑on effects on gas and oil prices for businesses and societies.
As the geopolitical landscape shifts, market participants are closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and the U.S. diplomatic stance, as any escalation could reverberate through energy markets and bond yields worldwide.
