Acemoglu Urges Wealth Taxes as AI‑Driven Inequality Threatens U.S. Democracy
Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoglu, who shared the 2024 prize with James A. Robinson and Simon Johnson, has warned that America’s democratic future hangs in the balance as AI‑driven job losses widen the wealth gap. In a recent interview, Acemoglu argued that President Trump’s authoritarian style is a symptom, not the root, of the country’s institutional decay.
Acemoglu’s research, laid out in the 2012 book *Why Nations Fail*, shows that inclusive political institutions drive prosperity. He cautions that the United States is headed toward a “grim path” if it continues to let AI displace workers and deepen inequality. According to him, the nation has already seen 1.2 million layoffs in 2025—a 58 % jump from 2024—more than 50,000 of which he attributes directly to AI.
The economist calls for a “wealth tax” to curb the widening gap. He cites California’s proposed billionaire tax, which would levy a one‑time 5 % charge on individuals with a net worth of $1 billion or more. “That alone is not enough,” Acemoglu said. “We need mechanisms that let workers of all skill levels participate in growth.”
Not all agree. Adam Thierer, senior fellow at the R Street Institute and long‑time proponent of technological progress, argues that AI will create new opportunities and drive the economy forward. He maintains that innovation inevitably brings disruption, but that the benefits outweigh the costs.
Acemoglu counters that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence—technology that matches or surpasses human cognition—poses “huge social consequences that are quite adverse.” He urges policymakers to focus on mitigating inequality and protecting jobs rather than chasing speculative AI milestones.
The debate underscores a broader question: can America preserve its democratic institutions while embracing rapid technological change, or will unchecked inequality and job loss erode the very foundations of the republic?
