Nickel Surges Past $16,000 as Indonesia Output Cuts Loom
On October 20, 2026, global nickel prices jumped 2.72 %, closing at $15,761.3 per ton on the London Metal Exchange and ¥105,259 per ton in China. The rally follows the People's Bank of China’s shift in its interest‑rate benchmark and a robust third‑quarter GDP report, both of which have lifted expectations for industrial demand.
Chinese producers are reportedly preparing to negotiate limits on Indonesian nickel output, easing the persistent oversupply concerns that have weighed on the market. Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel producer, has signalled a potential 34 % cut in output for the year. Meanwhile, Vale has temporarily halted production at its Pomalaa and Bahodopi mines while awaiting regulatory approvals, though its Sorowako operation remains active.
The backdrop for this price move is a fragile 2026 market that followed a turbulent 2025 marked by macroeconomic stress, trade disruptions and deep supply imbalances. U.S. tariff policies and the Federal Reserve’s shifting interest‑rate outlook added volatility, while China’s fiscal stimulus and accommodative monetary stance, coupled with its “anti‑involution” policy introduced in July, aimed to shore up domestic demand.
Nickel’s performance lagged behind other non‑ferrous metals in 2025, with LME prices opening near $15,365 per ton and falling to lows around $13,865. The end‑year rebound began in mid‑December, driven by modest demand signals from Chinese stainless‑steel mills and electric‑vehicle battery makers, and speculative positioning that highlighted Indonesia’s supply risks.
Despite the rally, market participants remain cautious. The potential output cuts, regulatory uncertainties, and the broader macro‑economic environment continue to shape sentiment, suggesting that while nickel has broken above the $16,000 threshold, volatility is likely to persist into the coming months.
