New Delhi on High Alert as Opposition Expands Demonstrations Over Election Integrity
Political friction in India's capital is set to escalate as the Congress party ordered all of its Members of Parliament to remain in New Delhi on Monday, October 12, ahead of coordinated rallies over alleged electoral misconduct and voting fraud. The broader INDIA opposition alliance, accompanied by several student organizations, is demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Additionally, opposition leaders intend to present a formal memorandum to Chief Justice Surya Kant on Monday, calling for accountability regarding alleged constitutional breaches and police crackdowns on demonstrators.
The upcoming action follows intense unrest on Saturday at Jantar Mantar, where authorities took roughly 1,000 demonstrators into custody during a rally led by the CJP. Notable political leaders detained included AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, and CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Key CJP coordinators Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das were separately removed and detained from an aircraft. To curb the demonstrations, law enforcement enacted strict security measures across the capital, barricading the Ghazipur border, shutting gates at 45 Metro stations, and cutting local internet access.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi escalated his rhetoric against the administration, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of compromising democratic processes and orchestrating election theft. Gandhi further alleged that Delhi Police, under Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alongside RSS-BJP cadres, deployed force against students and female demonstrators, cautioning that attempts to crush youth-led movements would only fuel deeper resistance across the country.
