Prosecutors Dismiss Three Impeachment Charges Against Philippine Vice President Duterte
On a Thursday, the Office of the Prosecutor announced that it had dropped three of the impeachment charges that had been filed against Vice President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Duterte. The charges—allegations of corruption, bribery and abuse of power—were part of a complaint lodged by opposition lawmakers earlier this year. Prosecutors said the evidence presented was insufficient to sustain the accusations, and therefore the case will not advance to the Senate impeachment trial. The decision was met with mixed reactions: the vice‑presidential office hailed it as a vindication, while opposition figures condemned the move as a failure of the justice system to hold senior officials accountable. With the dismissal, the impeachment process against Duterte is effectively stalled, though the political fallout remains a subject of intense debate across the Philippines.
