Crude Prices Surge as Middle East Tensions Escalate and Diplomatic Talks Stall
Global oil markets rallied over 3% on Monday as renewed geopolitical instability threatened critical energy transit corridors. The spike in prices follows a series of hostile actions in the region, including Houthi-led strikes against Saudi Arabia and a weekend attack that necessitated the shutdown of a vital 1,200km (745-mile) east-west pipeline. These incidents, combined with reports of maritime aggression in the Gulf, have stoked significant fears regarding the security of global energy supply chains. Compounding these market anxieties, anticipated diplomatic discussions between Iran and neighboring Gulf states have been abruptly delayed. Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi confirmed the postponement late Sunday, citing the need for regional consensus. The meeting was intended to address a proposed framework for managing transit through the Strait of Hormuz—a strategic chokepoint that historically accounts for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply.
