Yen Nears 7-Month High Amid Strong Bullish Outlook
The Japanese yen rose in the Asian market on Wednesday against a basket of major and minor currencies, maintaining its strong gains for the third consecutive day against the US dollar, on track to retest its seven-month high amid strong bullish forecasts for the Japanese currency driven by several positive catalysts.
This decline in dollar levels comes amid renewed pressure from the US administration on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, while markets await the release of key US inflation data on Thursday and Friday, which will provide crucial clues regarding the future path of US interest rates.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, during his recent meetings on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in the United States with Japan's Finance Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Japan, called for moving forward with interest rate hikes and supporting the yen.
Yen Carry Trades: Amid growing bets that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates more than once this year, uncertainty continues to mount regarding the trajectory of US interest rates, particularly with tempered expectations surrounding the pace of monetary tightening in the United States.
Bullish Outlook
• Aninda Mitra, Head of Asia Macro and Investment Strategy at BNY Investments, said: "Recent moves depend heavily on how markets price the Federal Reserve's interest rate path."
• Mitra added: "We estimate that the fair value of the yen lies in the 140 yen per dollar range, so the yen's move back toward these levels should not be entirely surprising, after we clearly witnessed an exaggerated weakening of the yen to excessive levels."
