Japanese Yen Rebounds Following Takaichi Victory as Broad Dollar Weakens
The Japanese yen halted a six-session slide on Monday, staging a firm recovery following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's landmark electoral triumph. Meanwhile, the greenback faced widespread selling pressure amid reports that Chinese authorities instructed domestic financial institutions to scale back holdings of U.S. government debt.
After touching a two-week trough during early Asian trade, the yen reversed course sharply. The U.S. dollar retreated roughly 0.84% against the Japanese currency to 155.88 JPY. The bounce followed remarks from Japan's chief currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, who emphasized that officials are monitoring foreign exchange volatility with elevated urgency. The recovery also pulled the yen back from historical lows against the Swiss franc and multi-year depths against the euro. Goldman Sachs analysts observed that markets are adjusting to anticipated fiscal expansion under the incoming administration, driving Japanese government bond yields higher while nudging USD/JPY lower.
Compounding the dollar's retreat, reports indicating that Beijing advised local institutions to trim their U.S. Treasury exposure pushed the onshore Chinese yuan to a 33-month peak. In offshore dealings, the greenback declined 0.24% to 6.922 against the yuan, marking its softest valuation since May 2023.
The U.S. Dollar Index sank 0.79% to 96.86 ahead of a crucial lineup of American economic updates, including delayed employment figures, inflation metrics, and retail sales. Simultaneously, the euro advanced 0.83% to $1.1914. Market participants continue to recalibrate their monetary policy outlook following Kevin Warsh's nomination to take the helm at the Federal Reserve, with the CME FedWatch gauge signaling a modest 17.8% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate reduction at the upcoming March 18 policy gathering.
