UK Debt Office Executes £1.25 Billion Gilt Auction Maturing in 2029
The UK Debt Management Office has successfully placed £1.25 billion in treasury gilts set to mature in 2029. While the majority of UK government debt consists of conventional bonds—where interest payments and principal remain fixed—approximately 25% of issued gilts are index-linked. These instruments provide a unique hedge against rising costs by adjusting both semi-annual coupon payments and the final principal amount based on the Retail Price Index (RPI). Because RPI accounts for housing costs like mortgage interest, it often tracks higher than the Consumer Price Index (CPI), making these bonds a strategic tool for investors looking to preserve purchasing power. With the UK holding the world's largest share of inflation-linked debt—totaling roughly £620 billion across 33 different issues—these assets remain a cornerstone for institutional portfolios. Investors acquiring these bonds on the secondary market should be aware of the 'dirty price,' which includes accrued interest, distinguishing it from the 'clean' market price.
