Bessent Faces G20 Test on Trade, Iran Sanctions as Yields Rise

At this week’s G20 finance summit in Asheville, North Carolina, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to confront a host of economic challenges. The agenda will focus on trimming global trade imbalances, stimulating growth, and tightening sanctions on Iran, all while U.S. debt levels and bond yields continue to climb.

The two‑day meeting, held on Monday and Tuesday, comes against a backdrop of uncertainty. U.S. tariffs remain in place, energy and commodity prices stay elevated, and the ongoing conflict in Iran has kept the Strait of Hormuz closed, weighing on growth across G20 economies.

Bessent is expected to place Iran at the center of the discussion, urging the group to strengthen sanctions. However, many finance ministers are likely to shift the conversation toward tariff policies, as noted by experts.

A senior Treasury official highlighted that reducing trade imbalances caused by what Washington calls distortive government policies will be a key focus. Meanwhile, European participants are keen to address the surge in Chinese exports that threatens sectors such as the automotive industry.

The Secretary will also face scrutiny over U.S. debt and recent Treasury interventions in the bond market. Officials have acknowledged that long‑term yields have risen above what they consider fair value, and the Treasury is committed to bringing them down.

Former Treasury official Mark Sobel warned that G20 ministers will not be persuaded by diplomatic niceties, pointing to the economic fallout from the U.S.‑Iran conflict that many governments do not support.

Overall, Bessent’s performance at the G20 will be measured by his ability to navigate these complex issues while maintaining cohesion among the world’s largest economies.
