Bitcoin Holds Ground Above $77,500 as Rising Open Interest Signals Possible Bear Trap

Bitcoin (BTC) is trading just above the $78,000 mark, but a widening gap between falling spot prices and climbing open interest on derivatives markets has analysts warning of a potential bear trap.

Open interest – the total value of outstanding futures contracts – has been on the rise even as BTC’s price has slipped, suggesting that fresh short positions are being added rather than long positions being liquidated. This dynamic, coupled with funding rates turning negative across major venues, is a classic indicator of bearish pressure.

On Saturday, BTC fell to $77,614, the lowest intraday level since May 1, before rebounding to the $78,000 range. The combination of a price dip, rising open interest and negative funding has led some traders to believe that bears are doubling down, effectively betting that a breakdown has already occurred.

Key support and resistance levels remain in play. $75,000 has been identified as a potential downside floor, while $71,000 is seen as the nearest significant liquidity zone below current prices. Analysts suggest that if Bitcoin continues to compress around the $80,000 area, any eventual move—up or down—could be amplified once market positioning settles.

Historically, extremely negative funding has preceded short squeezes, where forced unwinding of bearish positions can push prices sharply higher. Conversely, the same on‑chain signals could also accelerate a slide if the $77,500 support fails.

Bitcoin briefly breached $82,000 earlier this month on momentum tied to U.S. CLARITY Act developments, but the rally stalled and the price retreated. The asset has largely relinquished the gains it made in May, with macro headwinds from oil markets and U.S. bond volatility dampening risk appetite. Over the past 24 hours, BTC is down roughly 1% and remains within a multi‑week consolidation range that has frustrated both bulls and bears since the beginning of the month.
