Families Urge Welsh Government to Adopt Newborn Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Families in Wales are calling for urgent action as the nation lags behind other parts of the UK in implementing routine newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). While England has committed to rolling out testing and Scotland is moving toward a trial, the Welsh government has opted against it, citing current UK National Screening Committee guidance. The issue has gained significant public attention through high-profile advocacy, including campaigns by former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson, who has spoken candidly about her own daughters' diagnoses. For families like the Davieses, the delay is devastating. Their daughter, Ophelia-May, was born in September 2022 and initially showed signs of healthy development. However, by six months, her parents noticed physical delays, such as weakening neck strength and feeding difficulties. Despite their concerns, they were repeatedly told she would eventually catch up. It was not until she was nearly two-and-a-half that a referral to Noah's Ark Children's Hospital in Cardiff led to an SMA diagnosis in February 2025. Now primarily using a wheelchair, Ophelia-May currently manages the condition with daily oral medication designed to prevent further muscle cell degeneration. Her father, Warren, emphasizes that earlier detection is critical, as data indicates that starting treatment sooner leads to significantly better health outcomes. As the campaign for inclusion in the NHS newborn heel-prick test continues, affected families argue that the current policy prevents children from receiving life-altering treatment before irreversible muscle function is lost.
