Eurozone Debt Markets Steady as Lagarde Rejects French Bond Backstop
The eurozone debt market stayed largely flat today after French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde declined to offer a backstop for French government bonds. The Eurozone debt index closed at 4,120.00, a modest dip from the 4,140.00 level seen earlier in the session, indicating consolidation rather than a sharp move.
In parallel, commodity markets displayed a mix of modest gains and declines. Gold traded at $4,152.10, down 0.22%, while silver slipped to $59.025, a 0.84% drop. Crude oil remained near its previous levels, with WTI at $94.10, down 0.04%, and Brent at $105.53, down 0.15%. Copper edged higher to $6.7603, up 0.51%, whereas aluminium fell to $3,027.35, a 0.29% decline. Natural gas posted a stronger move, rising to $3.319, up 1.10%.
Market participants are closely watching the European Central Bank’s policy stance, while investors weigh the implications of Lagarde’s decision on sovereign debt liquidity and the broader risk appetite across the eurozone.
Data are reported as of 16:00 GMT on 14 October.
