Sharp Decline in Gold, Silver, and Platinum Prices: What Is Happening in the Metals Market?

The precious metals market experienced sharp and profound volatility during the first nine months of this year, overshadowed by geopolitical risks, rising bond yields, the strengthening of the US Dollar Index, and monetary tightening policies by the US Federal Reserve. These factors led to a significant retreat in the prices of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium from their record highs. Gold opened the year at $4,313 per ounce, testing a record high of $5,600 in January. After closing January with a 12.4% gain at $4,849 and February with an 8.5% rise at $5,263, gold was impacted by geopolitical developments in the Middle East, falling 11.32% in March to $4,667, marking its largest monthly decline since the 2008 crisis. Silver began the year at $71, hitting a record high of $121.7 in January. Following wide fluctuations that included a sharp 19.9% drop in March and a major 22% loss in June to $58.7, silver closed September at $60.5, bringing its total decline for the first nine months to 14.8%. Platinum and palladium were affected by global supply pressures and geopolitical tensions; platinum started the year at $2,054, reaching a record high of $2,923.3 in January before retreating to end the nine-month period with a 16.7% decline. Palladium began the year at $1,603 and faced heavy selling in the first half of the year and in September, closing at $1,211.2, marking a total decline of 24.4% over the nine months. Ergezen noted that a return to an upward trajectory for precious metals is closely linked to the end of conflicts, lower oil prices, and declining bond yields, ruling out a near-term recovery as long as interest rates remain high and expectations for continued monetary tightening persist.
