Crude Prices Retreat as Supply Concerns Moderate and Diplomatic Talks Simmer
Global oil benchmarks experienced a decline on Thursday, retreating approximately 1% as the market reacted to stabilizing supply chains and an unexpected uptick in US stockpiles. Brent crude futures dipped 1.1% to reach $96.92 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) slipped 1.4% to settle at $89.18 per barrel. This downward movement follows a strong performance in September, where Brent saw a 14% monthly gain and WTI climbed 5%. The current easing of supply anxiety is attributed to the resumption of crude exports from the Gulf, specifically the restart of tanker loadings from Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu facility. Additionally, data from the Energy Information Administration revealed a surprising increase in US crude inventories, which grew by 922,000 barrels to a total of 427.3 million for the week ending September 25—defying analyst expectations of a drawdown. Beyond supply logistics, traders are closely monitoring renewed diplomatic discussions between the US and Iran, which could potentially influence the geopolitical risk premium associated with Middle Eastern energy production.
