Mixed Market Sentiment as Tech Rebounds, Housing Slows and Energy Prices Diverge
U.S. equity markets finished the day with a lukewarm mix of gains and losses, as technology and semiconductor names pulled the index higher while the broader market remained flat. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite edged up modestly, buoyed by a 0.5% rally in chip‑related stocks, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2% on weaker industrials.
Housing activity continued to lag, with new‑home sales falling 3% in September and the existing‑home inventory remaining tight, underscoring a sluggish market that has weighed on the broader index.
Energy prices moved in opposite directions. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 60 cents to $98.42 per barrel (+0.61%) and Brent crude climbed 83 cents to $109.62 (+0.76%). In contrast, natural gas fell 2.4 cents to $2.94 per MMBtu, down 0.81%. Precious metals also slipped: gold dropped 1.57 points to $4,123.79 per ounce (‑0.04%) and silver fell 0.48 points to $57.53 per ounce (‑0.82%). Copper edged lower 0.0080 to $6.60 per pound (‑0.12%) while aluminium gained 8.50 to $3,028.00 per ton (+0.28%).
The mixed backdrop reflects a market still grappling with inflationary pressures, supply‑chain concerns and the latest economic data, while investors remain cautious about the pace of the U.S. recovery.
