European Central Bank Warns: Iran War Threatens Inflation Path

First Olli Rehn, a member of the ECB’s Governing Council and Governor of the Bank of Finland, warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could keep inflation in the euro area at elevated levels, given the risks posed by rising energy prices and potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz to the European economy.

Rehn told the Financial Times that the ECB is required to remain vigilant to inflationary pressures stemming from energy‑market developments, noting that continued geopolitical tensions could make price control more difficult if they feed through to energy costs in Europe.

These concerns are especially significant for the euro area, as higher energy prices can spill over into transport, production and services costs, increasing pressure on consumer prices and complicating policymakers’ task of assessing the inflation trajectory in the coming period.

Rehn pointed out that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz represent one of the risk sources the ECB must monitor, given the region’s importance for global energy supplies. Consequently, any prolonged disturbance could affect energy prices, adding new pressure on European inflation.

The Bank of Finland governor’s remarks come at a time when the ECB faces a tough equation of containing inflation while preserving European households’ ability to afford living costs. Rising energy prices not only affect the inflation index directly, but can also raise corporate costs and gradually feed into prices of goods and services.

For investors, these developments mean that the inflation path and energy prices will remain a key factor in shaping expectations for ECB monetary policy. Ongoing geopolitical pressure could also increase market volatility, with investors watching for any new signals regarding European interest rates.
