Iran's Civilian Toll Rises Amid Renewed US Strikes

In a sharp escalation of the Iran conflict, Tehran announced that 18 civilians were killed and 108 wounded during a wave of United States airstrikes that took place on the night of September 1. The Iranian Red Crescent reported that a wedding ceremony near the Strait of Hormuz was struck, resulting in four deaths and 67 injuries.

These figures add to the 3,636 people who have been killed in Iran since the war began, including 1,701 civilians, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. The United States has confirmed 18 of its military personnel killed and more than 750 wounded in the broader conflict.

The return of hostilities has alarmed the region, as Iran launched missile and drone attacks on what it described as U.S. assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq. The U.S. military has stated that it does not target civilians, a claim that has been contested by Iranian officials.

United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the civilian casualties and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the need for all parties to uphold international humanitarian law.

The Iranian Red Crescent released footage of debris and a damaged building with a large hole in the roof, along with images of the wrecked utility tower located 136 metres from the struck structure. Satellite imagery confirmed the tower’s proximity to the damaged building.

The incident at the wedding echoes the earlier Minab school blast, which killed 160 people, and highlights the continued risk to civilians in the conflict. The Pentagon has yet to issue an official finding on that strike, leaving questions about targeting accuracy unresolved.
