Gold, Bitcoin Surge as Investors Seek Safe Havens Amid Debasement Trade

In a market that has been anything but calm, gold and bitcoin have broken new all‑time highs, drawing a wave of investors looking for shelter from the turbulence that has defined October.

The rally is being driven by a mix of macro‑economic pressures – rising inflation, a ballooning U.S. debt load of roughly $3.7 trillion, a weakening dollar that has slipped about 8 % from the start of the year, and a government shutdown that has added uncertainty.

"The whole debasement trade is benefiting gold," said Christian Magoon, CEO of Amplify ETFs, on CNBC’s “ETF Edge.” The concept, which bets that continued borrowing and money‑printing will erode the dollar’s value, has pushed investors toward assets that are perceived as currency substitutes.

Gold topped $4,000 on Tuesday, its highest level ever, and has since outperformed every major U.S. equity index year‑to‑date, as well as its own 12‑month and 36‑month performance. Silver, meanwhile, has surged about 66 % this year, reaching an all‑time high of $50. Magoon predicts silver could climb into the $60s over the next year, citing limited supply and growing industrial demand.

Ken Griffin, CEO of Citadel, told Bloomberg that inflation remains well above target and that the dollar’s depreciation is a key driver of the shift toward alternative assets. "Gold is at record highs and the appreciation on other dollar substitutes… in items like crypto, for example, is unbelievable," he said.

BlackRock’s Jay Jacobs, head of equity ETFs, noted that October is historically the most volatile month on Wall Street and that many clients are rebalancing toward global monetary alternatives. "People are looking for assets that live outside of the traditional system," Jacobs said. He highlighted SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) and iShares Gold Trust (IAU) as the main vehicles for gold exposure, iShares Silver Trust (SLV) for silver, and iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) for those seeking regular bitcoin exposure.

With the debasement trade gaining traction, the market is seeing a steady inflow into precious metals and digital assets as investors search for stability in an environment of rising policy risk and currency uncertainty.
