Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Runway, Five Killed and Five Injured
A Boeing 767‑300 cargo aircraft operated by Amazon Air’s charter partner 21 Air crashed into the runway at Miami International Airport around 2:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) on Sunday. The aircraft, which had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, failed to stop and overran the diagonal runway, striking several parked vehicles before coming to rest at the northwest end of the airfield.
The impact ignited a fire that required a response from more than 200 firefighters. While the blaze was extinguished, crews reported a continuing fuel leak at the site.
Five people lost their lives and five others were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to critical. Miami‑Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed the fatalities and the injuries, noting that rescue crews arrived within seconds of the crash. Fire Chief Raied Jadallah added that three of the injured were in critical condition.
The Federal Aviation Administration immediately grounded all flights while investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) began their inquiry. The NTSB will hold a press briefing on Monday to discuss preliminary findings.
Amazon released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the victims and their families, and confirmed that the company is working closely with authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.
"We are heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today's incident at Miami International Airport," said Kelly Nantel, Amazon’s Director of Corporate Global Media Relations. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy."
