Zimbabwe Central Bank Debuts 'Big Five' Currency Series
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has officially commenced the national rollout of its upgraded 'Big Five' ZiG banknote series, following Governor John Mushayavanhu’s 2026 Monetary Policy Statement. Starting April 7, 2026, the new ZWG10, ZWG20, and ZWG50 notes—which feature iconic wildlife imagery—have been distributed to banks nationwide to address previous durability concerns and enhance security. While the new series enters circulation, existing ZiG notes remain legal tender and will be phased out gradually as they flow back into the banking system for replacement. The RBZ plans to introduce higher denominations, specifically ZWG100 and ZWG200, based on future market requirements. This expansion follows a period of notable economic stabilization, characterized by inflation dropping to 3.8% in February 2026 and foreign reserves reaching $1.2 billion by late 2025. Despite these improvements and a shift in policy toward larger denominations, the U.S. dollar maintains a dominant role in Zimbabwe’s informal economy. The central bank now faces the ongoing challenge of building public confidence in the local currency, which continues to grapple with the legacy of historical hyperinflation.
