Denmark denies granting America privileges for mining in Greenland

Denmark confirmed today, Wednesday, that any American exploration for oil, gas, and minerals in Greenland must be subject to the island's laws, emphasizing that the security agreement signed with the United States last month does not grant American investors special privileges to access the island's natural resources under Danish sovereignty.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the agreement between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States does not grant American investors preferential treatment compared to investors from NATO countries, the European Union, and the alliance's partners.

According to unnamed experts, the U.S. president claimed that the island contains easily extractable oil reserves that exceed most regions of the world, without disclosing specific projects or investment agreements.

Potential exploration plans face legal restrictions, after Greenland banned oil exploration and uranium mining in 2021, although the island's authorities are currently reconsidering allowing the American company "Greenland Energy" to use previous licenses that were subject to the ban.

Trump signed a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland last September, allowing the expansion of the U.S. military presence, the establishment of two new bases, and support for the "Golden Dome" missile defense project.

U.S. Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that Taiwan pledged to invest $4.4 billion in the project, while the head of its ministers, Chou Jong-tai, confirmed that his government's priority is ensuring energy supply stability and enhancing security.
