Revolut Eyes Swiss Banking License to Challenge Local Financial Giants

The British neobank giant Revolut has officially initiated its bid for a Swiss banking license, submitting an application to the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). This strategic move is designed to deepen the company's footprint in Switzerland, where it currently serves 1.3 million customers through its Lithuanian-regulated subsidiary. By securing local authorization, Revolut intends to transition from a niche foreign service provider to a full-fledged Swiss bank. This upgrade would allow the company to offer essential local services, including Swiss IBANs, eBills, integration with the Twint payment system, and potentially Pillar 3a retirement products. Currently, many Swiss employers and government agencies cannot transfer funds to Revolut accounts due to technical incompatibilities, a hurdle the new license aims to clear. While Revolut remains significantly more affordable than traditional, long-standing Swiss banks, it faces stiff competition in the digital space. According to recent industry analysis, Revolut currently ranks fifth in terms of cost-efficiency among neobanks, trailing behind competitors like Neon, Alpian, Wise, and Bank WIR. Experts suggest that while Revolut is a popular choice for international travel and currency exchange, this licensing push is a calculated attempt to capture a larger share of the primary banking market and increase active engagement among its existing Swiss user base.
