Fed Chair Warsh Signals Possible Rate Rise Ahead of Jackson Hole, Intensifying Focus on Trump’s Inflation Record
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has set the stage for a decisive move on interest rates, raising questions about President Donald Trump’s ability to curb inflation. After hinting at higher rates last week, Warsh’s remarks at the Kansas City Fed’s Jackson Hole conference on Friday underscored the possibility of a policy shift that could impact the U.S. economy just weeks before the midterm elections.
Warsh’s comments come as the Fed’s policy committee is poised to meet on September 15‑16. Market participants now see roughly a 66% probability of a 0.25 percentage‑point increase in the overnight policy rate, which has been anchored at 3.50%‑3.75% since December. The odds surged following Warsh’s speech and a subsequent spike in the risk premium demanded by long‑term Treasury investors amid renewed U.S. strikes on Iran.
The Fed’s 12 voting members are split on the timing of a hike. Three of them, who voted for a rate increase at the July 28‑29 meeting, opposed the decision to keep rates unchanged. Warsh, who was appointed by Trump, now faces heightened scrutiny from both the public and investors. Critics argue that any deviation from the 2% inflation target could erode the credibility he has worked to establish.
Trump has publicly expressed confidence that Warsh intends to cut rates, but claims that other Fed officials are “hostile” and “political.” The former president reiterated his preference for the lowest global rates despite the U.S. carrying $40 trillion in debt and running high deficits.
Economists at Bank of America, Aditya Bhave and Shruti Mishra, noted that Warsh’s new stance places the onus on him to deliver tangible results. Failure to do so could jeopardize the trust he has earned.
Before the September meeting, the Fed will review August’s job and consumer inflation data—critical metrics that will inform whether the central bank can justify a pause or a hike. Warsh has cautioned against overreliance on individual data points, emphasizing a broader view of the economic landscape.
In short, Warsh’s Jackson Hole address has sharpened the focus on the Fed’s next move and intensified scrutiny of Trump’s inflation narrative, setting the stage for a pivotal policy decision in the coming weeks.
