US Yields Edge Higher as Energy Decline Stalls, Fed Faces Divided Rate Cut

The Federal Reserve’s latest policy move has left markets on edge. On Wednesday, the FOMC trimmed the federal funds target range by a quarter‑point—its third reduction this year—bringing the benchmark to 3.50%‑3.75%. The decision, approved by a 9‑to‑3 vote, exposed a split in a committee that typically acts in unison.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell stressed the need for cohesion, but the vote underscored growing uncertainty as the U.S. economy grapples with a mix of tariff‑driven price pressures, labor‑force changes from past immigration policies, and broad fiscal cuts. The pause in the government shutdown has also left key inflation and employment data incomplete, complicating the Fed’s assessment.

Inflation has ticked up from 2.3% in April to 3.0% in September, while unemployment rose modestly from 4.0% in January to 4.4% in September. These dual upticks place the Fed in a delicate position: holding rates too high could choke growth, while cutting too quickly risks reigniting price gains.

Powell cautioned that the committee must treat forthcoming data with “a somewhat skeptical eye” because October and November’s statistics were not collected during the shutdown. He also highlighted the clear inflationary impact of President Trump’s tariffs, which the Fed is monitoring closely.

The political backdrop adds another layer of tension. Trump has publicly criticized the Fed’s stance and is reportedly considering a new chair, with Kevin Hassett—a former Treasury economist—named as a potential candidate. Powell’s term ends in May, leaving the White House the opportunity to appoint a successor.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields have nudged higher as energy prices, which had been falling, have stalled. The combination of a divided Fed, lingering tariff effects, and a sluggish energy market is keeping investors wary as the economy navigates a complex policy landscape.
